LoL: League of Legends Review

2:11 am in PC Game Reviews (free to play, not FOSS), Reviews by MANERS

For those of you that have played Warcraft III DoTA, you know the drill. Just add more power to minions and less health to towers. Also add a building inside the enemy’s base that if you manage to get in and destroy it you spawn epicly powerful “super minions”. Oh, and you can’t forget about the ability to hide in grassy areas. Best of all, this game is FREE TO PLAY! They make money via “micro transactions” in which you pay a little bit of money for skins on characters or something that you could otherwise gain with time (thankfully, these players do NOT have any real benefits).

For those of you that do not know what DoTA is, imagine two bases on opposite sides of a battlefield with three separate lanes connecting them. Each lane has six towers, three belonging to each team, respectively. There are also little pathways between lanes that are home to neutral foes that you can kill for experience points, gold, and sometimes even bonuses. This is the standard DoTA map (there are others). Then add an “inhibitor” at the end of each lane and grassy areas to hide in. This is the standard map for League of Legends: Summoner’s Rift.

lol map summoners rift

The game play mechanics are as follows: five people on each team (the number is different depending on what map you play) spawn in their respective bases. In said bases are identical spawn points that can heal your HP, as well as a store, a main building, and a few towers to protect the main building. Players have a minute an a half to buy an item with their startup gold, decide on who gets what lane, and run to the space between the lanes. When this time has passes, “minions” spawn from each teams’ base and independently creep up each lane, clashing in the center. Players can gain gold and experience points by killing said minions and leading them to the enemy defense towers. You want to let the minions go first when attacking a tower, for if you do it will attack every last of your minions before targeting you. Beware! If you attack an enemy players while by one of their turrets, the turret will automatically aim for you. The first team to get into the other team’s base and destroy their main building wins. Simple enough, right?

Well, let’s add more pieces. There are a little more that forty heroes in the game, which you can choose each game. Each one has different abilities that you can make stronger as you progress each game. You also can add two abilities of your own choosing that are attached to your accumulated experience (“Summoner Abilit. With those accumulated experience points (aka “Influence Points” or “IP”) you can buy new characters/heroes and runes to put in your rune book that give you a very small boost of various in-game stats. You also have out of game “Mastery Points” that you gain with each out of game level you gain. These can be used to either make a stat or a summoner ability stronger. Your spending options for your mastery points are in tree-diagram form; some abilities have requirements. Also, you can also always redistribute your points wherever you want them.

This game has an amazing community. Most players type while in game, and few flame you if you are a noob (though they may complain). You will want to do the in-game tutorial either way, though. Also, the devs are all friendly and release new content about every week.

As for my rating? I love this game. I used to play Wracraft III, but never got into DoTA. I enjoy the thrill of killing another player just a second before they teleport back to their base, coming out from behind the bushing and claiming the life of an unsuspecting victim, and that amazing feeling you get when taking out that last tower. This game is very replayable, and even if you stop playing for a few weeks, there is always something new to come back to.

You can get this game at http://leagueoflegends.com/ for free. It is a must for all PC gamers to at least try this game. Free to play games are coming to the point where they are just as fun and as detailed as retail games. I think that LoL has a chance of being one of the first free to play games to rule its genera.

Yu-Gi-Oh Online 3 Review

4:10 pm in PC Game Reviews (free to play, not FOSS), PC Game Reviews (not free), Reviews by MANERS

For those of you that don’t know, Yu-Gi-Oh Online is a free to play recreation of the collectible card game. If you just squealed in excitement, keep reading. If you yawned or gagged, please stop reading, for this review is going to assume you have knowledge of the game.

Graphics

I know what you are thinking. “Why should I care about the graphics? It’s a card game.” Well, normally I’d say the same thing, but the graphics have a few points that are worth mentioning. First, there are short cut scenes inserted in the duels of you drawing, playing cards, or taking damage, as well as little custom sayings you can make your character say when he/she does these things. The sayings can be fun, but the cut scenes can get annoying. Luckily you can disable them separately  in the options. Also, it’s good to note that when you do so it makes the game relatively net book friendly.

Sound

Another thing you don’t think you will care about, but will. Yu-Gi-Oh online has a soundtrack play plays constantly. It’s pretty cool but, again, can get repetitive. I suggest putting your own music on while you duel. But guess what, there’s no options to disable the sound! To disable the sounds of the game in Windows 7 manually, go Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Adjust System Volume>Simply click the blue speaker below the Yu-Gi-Oh online symbol to mute the program entirely.

Gameplay

Surprisingly, this game is very true to its real world counterpart. The in-game ban list is up to date constantly. The majority of the cards you know and love are available in game. All the rules, regulations, chain order, and turn phases are exactly like the real world game. Even the cards are unchanged. There are in game events and tourneyments with prizes, as well as in game chats and friends list, as well as a level system (which seemed to have no point). You may have multiple decks that have the same cards in them (ie: you only have one Time Wizard, but you have two decks. He may be in both decks at the same time) and you may also have a standard side deck. There are many options for duels, including making it a best two out of three match or a single game, as well as adjust time limits for players to take their turns and for the game to last. Ah yes, there are CPUs to play against, if you were wondering?

The Catch

Now, this “catch” is very give and take. When you get in the game you are given a standard 85 card trunk to make a deck from. Now, you can use those cards anyway you want and make as many decks as you want, but you CANNOT OBTAIN ANY MORE CARDS WITHOUT PAYING. Yes, it sounds stupid, but hear this: CARDS ARE ONLY $3 USD FOR 50. Compared to the real life game, that is more than 5x more for your money. This makes this game a great thing to play for a day with a bunch of friends. Everyone throw a few bucks in, see what they get, make the best decks they can, then play. A few days of fun for cheaper than the entrance fee for a festival. Now that’s a bargain.

You CANNOT enter events or tournament unless you have paid for anything in game in the last 30 days. That’s acceptable. If you care enough to play in a tournament you will have done that anyway.

You have to be 18 to buy cards with real money! I don’t care how old you are. This is total bull. I’m not going to lie, I made another account when I found this out. What are they going to do? Sue me for wanting to give them my money and time?

If this sounds fun to you you can download the 1.25 gig (800 mb installer, 350 mb patch) game at http://www.yugioh-online.net/. If you have any questions feel free to leave them as comments to this post!

Genisis AD Review

3:53 pm in PC Game Reviews (free to play, not FOSS), Reviews by Brisinger

A recently released game called Genisis AD has surfaced from the company known as Ijji and is more of a future F.P.S. game if you ask me. This is due to three things, one the weapons and accessories have a futuristic look to them, two the whole look of the game looks like you in another different time, and three the game ads some new features that other games do not offer.

Game Play:

The game play is simple just as any other F.P.S. but adds some new features to the mix. You still have your standard W,A,S,D  movement keys and you can select weapons with the 1,2,3,4,and 5 keys. You look around by moving the mouse fire with the left click and zoom with the right click. However the game possess an interesting feature which is called “energy” which you start out with so much depending on which pack you buy for you character. You can either go invisible or “cloak” you character with a sniper class or jump far distances with a jet pack that gives boosts so you can fun around the map. These features are all fueled with “energy” which you can get more by killing a member of the opposing team to get some of the energy which you can then pick up o replenish your own. On a scale of one to then I would give it a 7.

Graphics:

The graphics in the game are surprisingly good but do not compare with some of the best out there. The miscellaneous items and such through out the game relatively good detail, while the walls and floors could use more , however the other characters seem to look good in themselves even though they can be hard to notice at times. As much potential this game could have had with graphics it fails in the face that the effort put into it could have been a little more. On a scale of 1~10 I would give it a 7.

Final Verdict ?:

This game does look like any other F.P.S. at the Get-Go but once you start playing it you will see it has something that sets it apart form other F.P.S. games if you will. I urge you to approach this game with caution for it is not for it it not likely that everyone who played this will enjoy it. The Dot Gamer Clan give this game a final review rating of 7.5~10.

I hope you enjoyed yet another review from Gruenishki!!

Wolf Team Review

3:55 pm in PC Game Reviews (free to play, not FOSS), Reviews by Potzi

Hello there I suppose that you are reading this for info so here it is. Most of you probably think that it is just a werewolf game I’m not going to try it. But you can also be human; you can morph into a werewolf at any time you want as long as you’re in a game type that lets you. The point of the game is… Well just kill people. There are Seton perks that can be added to your wolf and make them look like this .

They are psycho I am not sure of what that one does. Berserker I am also not sure.  Ice when hit slows you with a hunk of ice on you. Regular, well that just self explanatory. You can give them tattoos with give them increased power/speed/health/etc…  And you can give them special slashes like luminous, shadow, and blaze.

And back packs that give you more WP than normal etc… Oh, and they can run on walls. Also when in wolf form your in 3rd person.  The humans however do not want to get close to them. So they have guns you have starter guns forever and other guns for a few days. You get gifts from the company like I got world cup grenades which is a soccer ball grenade.

And there are gold guns yes gold guns.   There is a gold sniper, gold ak, gold shot gun, etc… you can upgrade guns. You got grenades that pull you in and grenades that push you out so that means have fun camping. There are 3 forms of money to spend one that you have to actually by with money and gold and wp. You get gold just by

playing games. You get wp for just playing a certain amount of games. You can use gold on some guns and mostly everything. You can use wp on special guns and other things. You can by weapon packs with wp and money and in the futher gold. The packs can include guns, armor, tats, slashes etc… there are 7 game types and they include death match, destruction, and conquest. there are 15 maps from close range to big.

the servers are not like normal servers instead they are country based like american, Asia, Singapore. Other wise the game play is good and i have only come across 1 hacker. so have fun and i hope this helps you.

Alliance of Valiant Arms (AVA) review

8:44 pm in PC Game Reviews (free to play, not FOSS), Reviews by JarJar2940

Alliance of Valiant Arms, or AVA, to summarize is one of THE most epic FPS games of all time. The game, to start off, the game was published by ijji. Once you sign up, a tutorial is available for a one time payment of 10,00 Euro. It teaches you the basic controls of the game like sprinting, changing between classes, the basics of sniping and shooting, laying C4, escorting a tank, opening doors, picking up weapons, and so on. After the tutorial, you will receive 10,00 Euro and 3 expendable weapons for each of the three classes: an MP5K RAIL for your point man class; a scoped M4A1 for your rifleman class; and a SV98 for your sniper class. Now after the tutorial, you’re on your own. Let me briefly describe the game modes for you:

DEMOLITION: Demolition is basically Search & Destroy’s identical twin. There are 2 sides of the map, and twoava Alliance of Valiant Arms screenshot 4bomb areas. The teams switch off mid game: One team needs to eliminate the other in order to prevent them from laying the C4. The other team’s objective is TO plant the C4 at one of the 2 bomb areas. The first to grab the C4 from the shelf on the offensive team has the ability to plant it. If that person is killed, then the opposing team is able to pick up that block of C4. The way the offensive team wins is by planting the C4 and allowing it to go off. The way that the defending team is able to win if by eliminating the enemy forces. There are 2 maps for this mode so far.

DOMINATION: In this mode, two teams battle in order to take control of an EMP site in Latvia. There are two places to gain control on the site, one above the other. When one team has control of the command post, the other team has an “air strike” meter that charges. When the meter reaches the top, that team is able to initiate an air strike. Once your team’s meter gets to the top, your team wins. There is only one map for this game mode.

ANNIHILATION: Annihilation is basically team deathmatch. You can set the kills from 80 to 180. There is also a time limit of 15:00 in case you don’t reach the maximum kills. There are 2 maps for this game mode.

ESCORT: In this game mode, your mission is to escort a tank through a city. One team’s objective is to escort theava Alliance of Valiant Arms screenshot 3tank, and the other’s objective is to prevent the escorting from breaking into their line of defense in the set time limit. The team preventing the escort from happening is able to equip an RPG-7. Two hits from this RPG-7 will successfully destroy the tank. The escorting team is then able repair the tank back to full health. With one person repairing the tank, it will take about 15 seconds, give or take a few. Depending on the map, there are 1-3 checkpoints where the defending team is pushed back to a farther spawn point, and the escorting team is pushed forward to a closer spawn point. Whoever gets the farthest in the amount of time given, or whoever gets through the line of defense the fastest wins. There are currently three maps for this game mode.

FREE-FOR-ALL: Free for all is like Combat Arm’s One Man Army. In this mode it is every man for himself fighting off up to 15 people. The first person to get the maximum amount of kills in the set amount of time wins the match. There are currently 2 maps for this game mode.

ava Alliance of Valiant Arms screenshot 2Now the things that really caught my eye in this game was the fact that they had challenges and the ability to earn ribbons, medals, and badges. The reward for earning these badges varies depending on the amount of skill needed to earn it. Once you reach level six, your are “banned” from the first beginner channel, but you are still allowed to play in the second beginner channel. Also, once you reach level six, you are able to make a clan.

The Euro earned from these challenges can go towards buying a permanent weapon. You get to keep this weapon, but you should, but are not required to, repair your weapons often. If you do not repair your weapons, they may malfunction often, depending on how long you used it without repairing it.  Some weapons are expendable, meaning that you can use them until there “structure” runs out, and they are unusable; expendable weapons CANNOT be repaired. All items are also expendable.

Personally, my favorite part of the game was the fact tat every team has a squad leader. That squad leader is able toava Alliance of Valiant Arms screenshot 1 use what is called Reconnaissance Binoculars. These “Recon goggles” are able to spot enemy troops and show them for the whole team to see. You basically need to zoom in on the goggles spot a person/people, put them in your sight and click. The whole team will then be able to see who you targeted. If someone kills who you targeted, you get what is called Leader Score. Speaking of extra score, You can also collect Dog Tags from fallen enemies and allies. Once you collect three of these dog tags, you get extra experience at the end of the game. You also have a chance of a “Lucky Shot” where you get extra points on a certain kill.

Overall, I see this game as a major accomplishment. Personally, I predict that this game will be a very popular FPS (It’s certainly my favorite). I see no flaws with this game whatsoever, except for a few glitches. By the way, our clan name for AVA is: DotGamerClan .
