*NOTE: Global Agenda patched since this review! Take a look at THIS post to see what we think about the changes that affect the trial version!**
Global Agenda is a third person sci-fi action MMO in which player-made alliances battle it out for chessboard-like squares. It just recently dropped pay-per-month for a one time fee of $35. The trial demo allows you to play much of the full game up to level 10 and lets you have multiple characters. The main features of the game are:
- Team and solo PvE instances
- 4 classes, each with special weapons and abilities
- Long range and short range combat
- A heal function built into every character no matter what class
- Jetpacks (gotta love jeckpacks)
- Intense PvP (though the trial only lets you do practice games it’s still fun)
- Huge alliances, lots of competition
When you get into the game the first thing you are brought to is a character select screen. When you push the button to make a new character you must first pick one of four classes: Robotics (makes turrets, low hp, plays defensive), Medic (can heal self and allies, but does have damage output with poisons), Recon (fast; can be both a sniper and a close range; also has mines), and Assault (tanks that have rocket launchers and miniguns and lots of defense abilities). Next you go to a powerful character editor to edit everything about your characters face. Then you are suddenly thrown into an optional medium-length tutorial on how to play.
Once you finish the tutorial you are brought into a city. Here you can buy weapons, armor, and abilities, start missions, talk to others, and a ton of other things that I couldn’t figure out. Lucky for noobs like me there is a City Directory Access Point around almost every bend. From here you can select a place you want to go and a handy arrow-path-thing will show you the way.
Starting a PvE mission is a few simple clicks that put you into a queue. You can join a group via the queue, or you can have a pre-set team to start with, or half and half. The missions themselves are surprisingly challenging. The AI are stupid yet smart. They miss most of the time, but when they hit you it does a ton of damage. They also have a ton of HP. Usually surviving is a matter of either skill or patience: if you cna’t shoot and dodge you can just run away. It takes a little practice, but it’s easy to get the hang of PvE. I bet it will get boring easily, though.
PvP is amazing. Or rather, the practice rounds of PvP I played were since you have to be a level higher than 10 to play real PvP matches. It’s fairly well matched, though high levels are almost impossible to kill. There is a low level cap, though, so I guess that’s okay. I was able to get a few kills here and there. The jetpacks certainly bring a lot into the game. There is lots of chasing to be done in the air, and it takes much skill to do so. Each of the classes are dependent on one another (especially when a Recon has to kill an Assault; a Medic is really needed) and are all equal in battle. The Medic gets points for healing, which is always nice to see. I’d like to hear people’s opinions about the real PvP though. But, then again, this is a review of the demo/trial, not of the whole game.
Sadly, with the demo/trail account you cannot, as I said, level past level 10, which heavily limits you to what you can do. That’s understandable, though. If you like the game level up a character of each class and see what you like best, and if you still like it shell out the $35 for the real game. Seems worth it to me.
You can download the trial from either the official Global Agenda site or from Steam.
